今年で祝100歳

1). 米国の作曲家エリオット・カーター氏が今年の12月11日に満100歳になるという。ということはあのカラヤンとおなじ年生まれということになる。さっそく先月22日、お祝いムードいっぱいのコンサートがカーネギーホールで開かれた、という記事。プログラムはカーター氏47歳のときに作曲した「管弦楽のための変奏曲」、シューマンの「ピアノ協奏曲」、チャイコフスキーの「交響曲第4番」。会場には主役(?)のエリオット・カーター氏も登場、やんやの喝采を浴びました。

レヴァイン氏とMetオーケストラは今夏のタングルウッド現代音楽祭を皮切りに、誕生日の来る12月まで「カーター尽くし」のプログラムを組んでいるそうで…。12月にはボストン響によるピアノとオケの新作のお披露目演奏も予定されているそうです。

2). 話は打って変わってこちらの記事。もうじきFirefoxの最新版が全世界同時にリリースされるようですが、記事にもあるとおり、いまやWebブラウザの世界はいつぞやの「ブラウザ戦争」再燃のおもむき。FirefoxにOperaにSafari…と使う側にしてみればいろいろ選択肢があったほうがいいに決まってます。記事によるとFirefoxのシェア占有率は18%だという。1位はあいかわらずIEですが、グラフを見ればわかるとおりここ2年でじりじり右肩下がり。でもApple謹製Safariブラウザについては、

Even Apple, which once politely kept its Safari browser within the confines of its own devices, is making a somewhat controversial push to get it onto the computers of people who use Windows PCs.

ともある。記事後半で具体的に出てきますが、ようするに例のBad Ware騒動のことでしょう。べつにそんな姑息な手段に訴えなくてもいいとは思うけれど。

自分もFirefoxをメインで使っているので、最新版にはおおいに関心あり(Mozilla FoundationがNetscapeを買収したAOL傘下とは知らなかった)。Firefoxは2003年に初お目見えしたんですね。今回のメジャー・アップデートは開発に3年、公開テストに半年かけてのリリースだけに、どんなものなのか、楽しみでもあるけれど、いままで使っていたプラグインとか便利な機能がそのまま引き継げるのか、少々不安でもあるのが正直なところ。でも、

　ブラウザ戦争再燃、といっても、以前とはWebを取り巻く環境はがらりと様変わりしています。いまやメール、ファイルストレージ(本来storageは「ストーリッジ」のように発音)のみならず、表計算やワープロといった従来はお高いオフィススィートのようなソフトを買うしかなかった機能でさえ、ブラウザさえあればなんだって――それもロハで――できる時代になりつつあります。Web上の「デスクトップ」なんてサービスまである。「フレームが…」とかCSSをきちんと解釈してくれずレイアウトが…なんて話は「いまは昔」。

With tasks like e-mail and word processing now migrating from the PC to the Internet, analysts and industry players think the browser will soon become even more valuable and strategically important.

"People in the industry foresee a time in which for many people, the only thing they'll need on a computer is a browser," said Mitch Kapor, the software pioneer who now sits on the board of the Mozilla Foundation and has created a start-up, FoxMarks, that is developing a tool to synchronize bookmarks between computers.

いままで以上に重要性を増しているWebブラウザ。このぶんでいくと、OSとかPCそのものも大きく変えるような気がします。「たかがブラウザ」なんて言ってられません。

　ちなみに公式サイトでは、こういう企画まで用意しているそうです。なにやらお祭りムードですな…。

3). 最後はこちら。英国国防省が、1978-2002年までの「UFO目撃情報」の記録を公開した、というニュース。もっとも本来の調査目的は「英国領空を侵犯される恐れがあるかどうかを調べる」ためだったとか。熱心なUFO信者のなかには――よくあることだが――陰謀論を唱える人までいて、これまで非公開扱いだったのはなにか隠しているのだ、と勘繰る人までいたようで(古くは「死海文書」、最近で言えば「ユダ福音書」でもそんな陰謀説がまことしやかに唱えられたりもした)。で、今回公開された記録、結論から言えば、

Whatever they were, these phenomena reported to Britain’s Ministry of Defense over the years and made public this month were almost certainly not actual alien aircraft piloted by actual alien beings.

という、なんか肩透かし(?)を喰らったみたいな結果。ある意味予想通りか。

　個人的にはミステリーサークルとか、こういう話はなぜか英国では多いなぁ、という印象を受けます。『ハリー・ポッター』もそうだけど、ファンタジーものというか、妖精や魔女・魔法使いといった存在を信じている人が多いお国柄かもしれない。

　目撃談もそれこそ十人十色で、眺めているだけでもおもしろい。

これはさる上院議員の話。でも最後に登場する78歳の退役軍人の話ははっきり言って傑作です(笑)。

"Anxious to avoid causing offense," the report said, the man asked no questions, even obvious ones like, what planet do you come from? Instead, he returned to the riverbank, where he finished his tea (by then cold) and resumed fishing.

He was reluctant to tell his family, the report says: "I knew my wife would say 'No more fishing for you, old man.'"
